Customer Review :

Nice fire, and a little more eco-friendly. : Duraflame 00987 Stax Crackling Fire Log

I've used the Duraflame Stax logs a few times now, one 3 pack and one 6 pack. The box says that 3 Stax logs will burn 3 - 3.5 hours. One reason I bought these was the idea that I could have a fairly short duration fire.

My experience with them follows.

Cons:
They can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes to actually get going well, the paper does not seem to light the logs well.

Once they do get going they are very nice for about an hour or so then you must add another log or they slowly burn down to very minimal flames and begin to put off a greater amount of smoke.

If you add a third log it again takes about 20 minutes or more to get going well and then only lasts less than an hour before dying to minimal flames again.

Three logs do not stop burning after 3 - 3.5 hours as advertised, they smolder on with tiny flickers of flame for much longer. For example, a fire started last night at 9pm using only two logs, no third added, was still smoldering away at 2am.

In the end the fire burns down to very small flames while the logs appear to be barely consumed. They continue to burn for a few hours like this almost smoldering away. The smaller the flames get, the more smoke they generate. Twice now they have set of my smoke alarm, which is unusual (I've yet to have a wood fire do this).

They burn down so low and put off enough smoke twice I needed to open a window to create a better draft to keep the smoke alarm from going off again, which of course sucks cold air into the room.

They do not put off a great deal of heat, you're not going to keep warm with these logs unless you sit right next to the fire. If you need to open a window for draft, well you may need to turn the thermostat up just to keep the room at the temp it was before you started the fire.

Pros:
They do have a very nice appearance, when burning well, of a log fire.

You can extend the burn time by adding a third log.

You can have just a 2 log fire if you like, so a 6 pack can last you 3 fires. I am sure you could also burn just one log as well, but it wouldn't look as nice or put off much if any heat.

Unlike my experiences with larger Duraflame logs you can use a poker to easily and safely break these logs and get them going a bit better. However the renewed flame does not last very long at all. It is however handy if you want the fire to burn out more quickly than it would left on it's own.

They don't put off a lot of heat, which I listed as a con, but if you only want a fire for the look/atmosphere of one, that's a plus. I can have a fire going for a photo shoot in warmer weather and not cook the model.

Overall they are good for a more traditional fire appearance than a single engineered log, but the nice flames burn down quickly without consuming the log. They generate more smoke than you would expect from an engineered log. You also need to break them apart to end the fire in a reasonable amount of time
